Only the East Cape variety has been scientifically proven to have a High Triketone concentration up to 30% (triketone), Which is responsible for Manuka Oils anti-bacterial & anti-fungal properties. There are 11 different varieties of Manuka found on NZ most of which have low activity. East Cape Manuka oil has been studied extensively by the Cawthron Institute & the Crown Crop & Food Research & found it to be up to 30X stronger than Australian Tea Tree Oil. It even kills the antibiotic resistant MRSA Staph. Manuka (Leptospermum Scoparium) is a native tree of New Zealand traditionally used by indigenous Maori people & early European Settlers for it's healing properties. Manuka has been used to treat a range of skin problems including chronic sores, ringworm and excema. The young shoots of Manuka were chewed and swallowed for dysentery, & boiled to use for rheumatism, sore & stiff backs, sprains & abrasions. A decoction of leaves was drunk for urinary complaints & to reduce fever. Vapor baths of Manuka have been used for treating blocked sinuses, hay-fever, head colds & even bronchitis & asthma.
